There comes a time in every podcaster’s career where scheduling conflicts, natural disasters, car troubles, family issues, or even sickness get in the way of producing content. What’s a podcaster to do? Skip a week? Play a re-run? Or, how about power through and get the job done. We here at Four Brewers always choose the latter, no matter what.

Due to the scheduling conflicts that often arise between four beer-drinking dudes with lives of their own outside of their podcast, Greg and Matt couldn’t make it for what would normally be a three-episode recording session. Rather than skip a week, we’re keeping our promise to never miss an episode of Four Brewers. Jason and John decided to get together and have some light fun drinking whatever they could scrounge up at the local liquee (sic) store.

Session 50 Beers!Session 50 Beers!

The beers on this week’s episode range from light and hoppy to sour and barrel-aged. Johnpicked out some beers from Gerrards Market in Redlands, California, with a little help from the almighty Mo, Gerrards’ Beer Cave dweller and expert.

So, worry not, friends. Rest assured that there will always be a new episode of you’re favorite beer podcast ever week, as well as a new episode of Four Brewers, even if it means being a host or two light.

We’ll be there for you [/Friends theme song].

[S4/E6] This Quad is On Point, Man!

Season 4, Episode 6 – This week, Mike Kirshner sends us not only his homebrew, but also some totally whale-worthy brew from Jester King Brewery.

Don’t wait in line for Pliny the Younger! Get your raffle tickets for the Beachwood BBQ 6th Annual Pliny Fights Cancer Charity Raffle before February 18th! All proceeds go to the Melanoma Research Foundation in memory of Tony Carbone.

Jester King Brewery is a mainstay on the Four Brewers podcast. Anytime something new comes around from JK, you know we’re gonna jump on it and feature it on the show. This week, we got our grubby little hands on the latest white-whale to come out of the Texas beer scene by way of longtime 4B listener, Mike Kirshner. We’re also drinking some homebrew from Mike (he’s an awesome homebrewer, by the way…)!

Kicking things off is a super-sessionable mild from Jester King brew that clocks in at a mere 2.9% alcohol by volume named, Commercial Suicide. If there’s anything we love, it’s tasty brew that can be enjoyed all afternoon. Kollaborationsbier and Noble King follow up this delicious, slightly tart mild, making way for the beer we all came here for, Jester King’s gueuze-style wild ale, SPON Méthode GueuzeMatt also got his hands on a variation of SPON made with peach and apricot, and yes, it’s tasty af.

We wrap up the episode with four homebrews from Mr. Kirshner that we previously featured on an episode that (due to technical issues) didn’t make it to the podcast feed. We’ve featured Mike’s homebrew on the show before and are obviously always happy to feature killer homebrew from him and anyone else who wants to send their homebrew our way.

Thanks to Mike for providing the Jester King beers and the homebrew!

[S4/E5] Pizza Port, Port Brewing, Trillium, and Noble Ale Works

Season 4, Episode 5 – This week, we’re going full blown IPA.

This week on the show, we are drinking a massive amount of IPA. Not only are we drinking IPA from Pizza Port Brewing CompanyPort Brewing Company, and Noble Ale Works, we’re drinking some IPA whales from the legendary New England IPA whale farm, Trillium Brewing Company. That’s right folks! We’ve got some juice on the show this week and a mini IPA showdown.

Pizza Port and Port Brewing BeersPizza Port and Port Brewing Beers

So, here’s what happened. We were thinking of ideas for a show and it dawned on us that Port Brewing Company recently released some of their well-known IPA in cans. Since Pizza Port Brewing Company has been releasing their beers in cans for quite a while now, we thought, “hey! why not try them side-by-side to see which beers are best?” And now, here we are!

A lot of folks tend to get confused with the Port Brewing/Pizza Port/Lost Abbey brand of beers. Just to keep things simple, all of the breweries are owned by the same people. But just because they’re owned by the same people, doesn’t mean that they’re the same brewery. Port Brewing Company and The Lost Abbey brew out of the same brewhouse, while Pizza Port Brewing Company is actually a brewery that makes beers that were originally formulated by many of the small Pizza Port brewpubs in the San Diego area. Still confused? It’s ok. We get into it a little deeper during the show.

After the showdown (and a refreshing dive into the 4B Mailbag), we wrap up with two juice bombs from Trillium Brewing Company, and Noble Ale Works’ latest New England-inspired IPA, 24K Juice.

[S4/E4] Tap It Brewing Co.

Season 4, Episode 4 – This week on the show, ten tasty brews from San Luis Obispo’s Tap It Brewing Co..

We’re just going to put this out there, right up front: Tap It Brewing Co. out of San Luis Obispo, California, is brewing some really clean, tasty brews that are seemingly perfect to the beer styles they represent. No joke.

Tap It Brewing Co. Beers[Tap It Brewing Co. Beers

The beers this week were generously provided by the fine folks at Tap It Brewing Co.. They even sent a bottle of IPA overnight to ensure we got it within three days of bottling. The variety of beers they sent us pretty much cover most of the popular styles of beer that any solid American craft brewery would brew. Their IPA even won a gold medal at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival. The IPA category at GABF is the biggest and probably toughest category to win a medal in, so it’s speaks of Tap It’s quality quite a bit. Spoiler: The IPA is great.

Speaking of IPA, we all know that IPA is a style that is best enjoyed fresh. On the show, we mentioned that the bottles lacked bottling dates. Turns out, we didn’t look hard enough on the bottle, as we were informed by Tap It after the show that they do bottle date their 22 ounce bottles and 6 packs. The IPA they sent was about six weeks old at the time of recording, and while it wasn’t day-one-dankness fresh, it was still awesome.

It should also be noted that Tap It Brewing also makes some kick-ass barrel-aged and coffee beers, which we also feature on the show this week. It’s always fun to discover delicious beer from breweries that for some reason have flown under our radar. Tap It Brewing Co. is definitely a brewery to keep your eye on.

Thanks once again to Tap It Brewing Co. for sending the beers!

[S4/E3] Firestone Walker Barrelworks Bonanza, Pt. 2

Season 4, Episode 3 – This week, part 2 of the Firestone Walker blowout, with a special appearance by Boulevard Brewing Co..

We’re back with the second part of our Firestone Walker blowout. This week, we’re sampling some of Firestone Walker’s latest barrel-aged releases, as well as a fun Firestone Walker collaboration with sister brewery, Boulevard Brewing Co.

Firestone Walker and Boulevard Brewing Beers[Firestone Walker and Boulevard Brewing Beers

Firestone Walker make probably some of the best barrel-aged beers and blends out there. Both Firestone Walker in Paso Robles and their Barrelworks facility in Buellton, California, should be on the bucket list of must-visit breweries of any respectable beer geek. From Luponic Distortion IPA to Velvet Merkin oatmeal stout, Firestone Walker time and again never fail to brew beers that stand head and shoulders above the competition. In short, buy and enjoy their beer.

[S4/E2] Firestone Walker Barrelworks Bonanza, Pt. 1

Season 4, Episode 2 – This week, we’re drinking wild, sour and funky brews from Firestone Walker’s Barrelworks.

Any seasoned beer geek knows about Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s Barrelworks location in Beullton, California. It’s Firestone Walker’s facility where all of their sour and wild ales become the amazing beers that they are. John was recently in the area for Thanksgiving and decided to stop by to pick up some supplies, as well as meet up with The Friedman’s to get some tasty Almanac Beer Co. beers.

This week on part 1 of our two-part Firestone Walker series, we’re drinking the funky and sour beers from Barrelworks. Firestone Walker absolutely destroy when it comes to these kind of beers (hell, all of their beers, right?). In part 2 next week, we’ll be opening their newest barrel-aged offerings, their 20th anniversary blend, and a special collaboration beer they brewed with their sister brewery, Boulevard Brewing Company.

[S4/E1] I Wanna Rauch! RAUCH!

Season 4, Episode 1 – This week on the show, we’re sittin’ around the campfire and drinking smoked beers!

Welcome to 2017! In preparation for the possible fiery end of the United States of America as we know it (kidding…), we’re prepping by drinking some classic smoked and rauch beers, as well some beers from 4B listener, Andy Richter.

Smoked and Non-Smoked BeersSmoked and Non-Smoked Beers

Rauchbier and smoked beers in general can be polarizing, especially in the case of the four hosts of this very podcast. Matt and Greg absolutely love the smokey and peat characteristics of the brew, while Jason and John tend to stay away from the style for the most part. It’s a style that represents what beer in the days of old tasted and smelled like.

We take a “smoke break” half-way through the episode and drink some funky and fruity beers from Perennial Artisan Ales sent to us by 4B listener Andy Richter.

Since we’re drinking smoked beer this week, check out John’s cellar review of The Bruery’s Bois Fumé.

[S3/E52] The 2016 Holiday Episode

Season 3, Episode 52 – This week we drink our favorite and not-so-favorite holiday beers.

It’s been a rough year and we’ve got gluttony knocking on our door (it’s Christmas Eve and the first day of Hanukkah) so we’re gonna keep this post short…

The 2016 Holiday BeersThe 2016 Holiday Beers

1. Don’t buy those pre-made holiday beer gift packs. They’re usually all old beers that didn’t sell and were repackaged in a holiday-style gift box. This doesn’t mean those beers are inherently bad, but they’re probably past their prime and you won’t enjoy them as much if they were fresh.

2. Buy local craft “seasonal” beers. You’ll be much happier and you’ll #LiveLocal.

3. Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow and how you can help to make our world a better place. This, by far, is of utmost importance.

Cheers, from Four Brewers!

[S3/E51] Invasive Species vs. Sculpin

Season 3, Episode 51 – This week, we find out who will rein supreme in the battle between the Light side of the sea, and the Dark side.

Does anyone else smell fish? What is that? Oh, pshht…I know what it is. It’s a Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing, and an Invasive Species from Beachwood Brewing! We invited both of these underwater dwellers to battle it out on the show this week, with hopes of figuring out which one of these is the bigger fish to fry.

The Beachwood/Ballast Point ShowdowThe Beachwood/Ballast Point Showdow

A little back story: once upon a time, Ballast Point Brewing out of San Diego, California, was one the most respected craft brewers in the San Diego beer scene, until the company was sold to Constellation Brands, Inc. for a cool one billion clams (snicker). Since then, many beer geeks have written the brewery off as a “sell out” and stopped buying their products, and some have decided to overlook the buyout and just focus on the beer. But, just because a brewery sells to a larger macro brewery or company doesn’t necessarily mean the quality of their product will suffer, although sometimes recipes and practices tend to change over time to drive down cost and increase profit. In the case of Ballast Point, the beers are still pretty great for the most part.

Enter Beachwood Brewing. Beachwood has been very vocal about their brewing independence and dedication to true craft beer. In a very tongue-in-cheek move, they decided to brew a series of beers that were inspired by Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA and variants thereof, that positioned Beachwood to both comment on and snub Ballast Point and their wildly popular fruited beers. While they didn’t come out and blatantly say “fuck you,” to Ballast Point (for whatever reason, outside of the obvious craft vs. macro battle cry), the line of beers they brewed and subsequently named “Invasive Species” (with a depiction of a dead fish on the beer bottle’s label) sure did imply it. Fight!

So, here we are. We purchased the freshest Sculpin IPA and variants of Sculpin IPA (and Even Keel) that we could find and put them up against the two-week-old bottles of Beachwood’s Invasive Species IPA and variants. Who will prevail? You can probably guess who we’re rooting for…
